My boys Ari G and Maxmillion Dunbar just threw up this tight video of their release. It was directed and produced by good friend Aurora Halal & Ashiq Khonder. It already got cred this morning on Fader and is truly STRICTLY 4 DA FREAKZ.
6 days later, several hundred dollars poorer and completely phoneless, I am back from Miami.
Unfortunately all the pics I took were on my phone and therefore vanished in the recesses of a cab seat that is taking scores of others brain-fried partiers to the airport as I type.
Anyways, a quick few uppers and downers from the week’s festivities
UPPERS:
-Closing the club down at Danny Tenaglia’s Classics party at Scores (awesome, small gay club on Lincoln Rd.)
- Meeting tons of folks at the Shelter Party @ Shine
-Running into folks and putting names to faces almost everywhere I went
- Brooklyn Mecca/Libation party at Buck 15 with Ian Friday (killlerrr vibe and spot)
-Soul Heaven Pool party with Lil Louis, Terry Hunter and Louie Vega @ Fountainebleu (video above)
- Being fed, feted and friendly at the Scion VIP joint at Gansevoort.
-DJ Harvey laying down thick vibes @ Aquabooty (a nice change from the terrible progressive house blasting from every lobby/falafel stand/car stereo)
-Detox hot tub waterfall and nap at the Standard Hotel.
Downers:
-Blackberry being completely busted and not being able to type several alphabetical characters on the QWERTY pad
-The music and hot mess of people at the Jonathan Peters pool party (was only there a short while and it was free, OK!)
-Not being able to get in the maxxed out Objektivity party at SoBe Live (heard it was crazy)
-Mad Decent party being out in the middle of nowhere with a line for drinks that was wayyyy too long.
I copped this 12″ down at the thrift store and took a risk to buy it becuase Roland Clark was credited for doing an alternate mix. As you can hear, this record got alot of use, but this track is a real deep gem that I am glad I bought. The guitar has been completely gutted and a beautiful arrangement of straightforward bass and drum programming really allow the vocal to shine. I can’t get away from these amazing deep 90s male vocal tracks!!!
A few of you are aware of the hard work that Pablo Maurer, Nick Schwellenbach and Lucas Anderson have been putting into their film vision of the future: MOPEDLORDS. Here is the official press release:
In the year 2015, D.C. has eroded away into a post-nuclear territory ruled by warring moped gangs. Chase Cruz, a loner and brutal vigilante, is new in town and has chosen to stay on the outside as each gang lord struggles for power, sex, and drugs. Seduced and beaten down by the Mount Pleasant Marauders, Chase befriends former Mopedlord, Conrad Lockerbie, and together they ride out on a cross-country search for any remaining nuclear weapons. They will destroy what remains of the wasteland— unless moped thug Antonio Velour and femme fatal Madame Marauder can catch up with them. In the vein of Mad Max and Blade Runner, Mopedlords is a gritty and provocative six-part web series.
Getting to the good stuff: I play a pivotal character in the first two episodes named Rex Gold, a two-bit hustler and pimp who supplies Lockerbie some top secret goods. Many of you will recognize the appropriate PARTY HOUSE set and many of the characters involved with this project. The first three episodes should be ready in a few weeks and I am sure a killer viewing party will be held.
When I was an aspiring DJ at Colgate, I didn’t really start to get into the deeper stuff until the end of my sophomore year in 2003. This is one of those first records that I bought back then that was a real turning point for where I took my style and my collection. From what I know (because I wasn’t living in any city), this record didn’t chart or become anything big. However, I continually stick by it and love to play it out. The keyboard work on this is nothing short of exciting and it probably is the first time I got exposed to the idea of the “Shelter” (even though this wasn’t a Shelter record). I later found out it was produced by the dude in Steal Vybe, who also put out some quality deep instrumentals around this time frame. Definitely a sentimental record for me.
This beautiful 1980s “fusion” piece is one of my favorite laidback midtempo tracks. It retains a distinct, warm sound but is balanced with moments of great bursts of energy. This track is packed with so many little awesome organic sounds and percussion bits over the pulsing electronic bassline and sparse electronic drum programming. I prefer this vocal version over the dub because I think the singing fits in very well with the composition. Great warm-up track from the Puerto Rican salsa master and a cheap vinyl buy (typically under $10 on EBay or at the shop).
Frankie Knuckles couldn’t make the NextAid benefit last night and Mr. Regisford came through last minute in a big way. Really great to see someone with that kind of depth of experience and energy completely lift a room with incredible sound off its feet.
Hopefully photog extraordinare Josh Sisk got some fantastic photos of the dancefloor.
I have been involved in quite a few parties in the past few months, but this one was definitely the most special and the best one we have thrown at the Trinidad and Tobago Association to date. Check this video out:
